Open Arms Mission
In the mid 1980’s a small group of Christian men began talking about what could be done to help the needy in our city. They stepped out in faith, naming their work, Open Arms Mission, incorporated as a charity, purchased a building and began helping the less fortunate. In early 1987, a Director was hired and the hours of operation increased. In those early years, the food bank served approximately 80 families each month. Those numbers grew to 200 households by the mid 1990’s. Assistance requests have continued to increase since then. The Mission now averages more than 450 family visits to its food bank each month. Open Arms Mission does not receive any government funding. It is supported solely by businesses, churches, community groups, and caring individuals. Open Arms Mission is a volunteer (missionary) driven organization with only three paid staff members to keep operating costs as low as possible.
